Research Line: Yeast Genetics

Brief review of research line:

Our line of research is limited to the study of yeasts of the Antarctic territory, in aspects related to biodiversity, biogeography and biotechnological potential. The isolates obtained are characterized using classical, molecular and biochemical taxonomic tools. The adaptation of the different yeast species to the extreme conditions of the Antarctic is studied, from nutritional aspects, resistance to cold and UV radiation. In addition, the competition of different species is studied through the production of extracellular and antimicrobial enzymes. On the other hand, the potential of the enzymes and other metabolites produced by these yeasts (antibiotics, pigments, etc.) to be used in various biotechnological fields is evaluated.
